Endometriosis, a chronic and debilitating condition that affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age, is characterized by the growth of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, leading to severe pain and infertility. Despite its prevalence, the etiology and pathogenesis of endometriosis remain poorly understood, and current therapeutic strategies are often inadequate or associated with significant side effects. Moreover, diagnosis of endometriosis often involves invasive procedures and the condition frequently remains underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, resulting in substantial delays in proper treatment. The molecular underpinnings and cellular characteristics of endometriosis are vastly unexplored areas of research and represent a significant gap in our understanding of this disease.
Dr. Semir Beyaz at CSHL and Dr. at Northwell Health have joined forces to tackle endometriosis using multi-pronged state-of-the-art approaches with a vision to uncover biomarkers for diagnosis and novel targets for effective therapeutic interventions.
